Slow Hand Rocks .............
The Wallflowers opened the show and they were exactly as we thought - an obvious flavor of Dylan and some good - not great - but good songs that the old man is no doubt proud of. but we came to see Slowhand, yes?
There is no way that an EC concert can be disappointing, yet the fact that old time favorites such as I SHOT THE SHERIFF and most especially for us, OVER THE RAINBOW were not played, left us a tinge disappointed. Instead we got THREE songs by Paul Carrack, including his hit by Ace, HOW LONG. But, and this is the rub, it was an EC concert, not an Ace concert, or Mike and the Mechanics, etc. One song - maybe would have been sufficient. And what was with Winwood's HIGH TIME WE WENT to end it all? I get the play on words, but Carrack again???
As a result, we traveled over 600 miles one way to see the man who inspired a zillion garage guitarists, including your reviewer. We by luck, bought tickets in what is known as Prime Seating seats that gave us an outstanding view of the stage. The last time I saw EC was in 1988, so I was very excited to learn he was appearing at the PNC, where my wife's neice is employed.
In the end, we still were in awe of the man who has given us such great musical moments throughout our lives. It was the almost perfect concert - In spite of our disappointment, Clapton did provide some great memories - for me it was BADGE and for both my wife and I it was WONDERFUL TONIGHT and TEARS IN HEAVEN. His voice stronger than ever, and his guitar playing still the standard, Clapton played like he was still in the late 60's - not in his own late 60's. And although EC is known for his love of the blues, we both felt he reached back to his roots a bit more than we cared for.
